Things and Sorts

Just a few things I have caught up in as of late.

-Still cannot stop listening to this mashup of No Diggity and Thrift Shop.

-Not so mildly freaking out about the Basilica Block Party line-up for Night One.

-Switched to Feedly due to the impending demise of Google Reader. RIP Reader.

-The hunt continues for the perfect quiche recipe.

-And now I am strategizing how to spend every second of this weekend outdoors. Seriously.

minn: STILL

After a long winter, we can all get a little carried away with just wanting the weather to be bright and cheery. While perusing Mary Jo Hoffman's blog STILL the other day, I remembered that the beginning of spring is actually an intensely beautiful part of the year. Instead of disregarding our ventures outside as only consisting of brown grass and mud, STILL reminded me that it is about renewal and is necessary for those bright, cheery days to cultivate. I highly recommend devouring every last picture on the local Minnesotan's blog and then taking a walk outside. You may start noticing a few treasures of your own.

SURVIVING A MINNESOTA WINTER

HENNEPIN BLOG | SURVIVING A MN WINTER

The weather and I are in a fight. I've been bad talking this Minnesotan weather for awhile now and it finally decided to fight back. The first step I took outside my front door on Monday landed me on the snow and ice covered ground resulting in bruises and a lovely goose egg.

So I need to stop complaining and just tough it out. Hey, supposedlyyy there are only 13 more days of winter. But I feel like my calendar must be lying to me.

So for the next 2 weeks I will be hibernating with a few essentials to surviving this winter. These include:
-A fresh, clean candle to clear out the winter doldrums.
-Cozying up with my stories.
-Dry shampooing to avoid static and to cover up the fact that I won't be leaving my bed for 2 weeks.
-Wools socks, I freaking love wool socks! I steal them from my family and boyfran.
-Plaid scarf to live in.
-Aquaphor, God's gift to mankind. I literally would not survive winter without it on my lips and cuticles.
-Flannel sheets, because I can control the world from my bed and it should be soft and snuggly.
-And a nice glass of something warm. Or just wine in a mug.

Minnesotans love anything hockey related. I think 115,000+ people at Red Bull Crashed Ice in Saint Paul this weekend proved that.

Create: Office Art

Hennepin Blog | Office Art

The center I work at recently just acquired a new office space and my cube life was looking a little drab. Actually, it looked like a neon bar sign exploded in it. Highlighters, sharpies, and post its really need to tone down their color options. I feel like people usually dress up their work cubes/offices with pictures of their family and children's artwork. So unless I want to baby nap some kid and exploit them for their artwork, I decided I'd have to personalize my cube a little more subtly. I have gone with a more rustic clean look in my new cube using objects and art that I already owned but hadn't displayed properly. I now have a few lines of clipboards pinned up and can now interchange art, lists, and things that make me smile. I also framed a few art prints and bought this art print from Lloyd Gallery on Etsy. It's definitely what inspired the whole decor scheme with greens, browns, and grays. I was also really cool when I was younger and had a sweet pencil collection. It has kind of vanished due to me continually using said pencils until they were sharpened into non-existance. A branch pencil survived my sharpening (probably because I'd cut my finger off if I tried to sharpen it) and I added it to a vase to capture the "rustic" part of my scheme. I also now use a collator along one side of the cube that takes up a lot of empty space and gives me an area to have an organized mess. The collator always just sat on my desk folded up so it needed to be put to use and seriously looks amazing. To save money, consider buying a large art collection book at a bargain book rack and cut your favorite prints out and frame them. (There might be some legality issues with that so DIY at your own risk.) Now I just want to pick up a tiny globe and terrarium to complete the look! Anyone else get inspired to personalize their cube in an outside-of-the-cube way?

Wear: Heroic Capelet

hennepin blog | heroic capelet

A CAPE is the perfect layer for those who have to endure this frozen tundra. I just picked up Imogene + Willie's Florence Cape. And apparently in the nick of time because they seem to be sold out everywhere now. After looking (and almost fainting) at the forecast for the next week, my new dress code will be a mandatory minimum of 4 layers. Scarves can count as one.

Covet: The Late Autumn Boot

covet

Clarks Desert Boot (Beeswax Leather), Clarks Desert Boot (Oakwood Suede), House of Harlow 1960 Killian Bootie, DV By Dolce Vita Madge Lace-Up Ankle Boot, Clarks Desert Breeze, Eric Michael Desert

I need a pair of warm boots without that awkward bulk that winter boots are so famous for. Think Uggs (blech) or Sorels. These 6 boots seem to be the perfect transition from ballet flats to riding boots for this unseasonably warm Minnesota November. I am in love with the desert boot and chukka style and the beeswax leather reminds me of my favorite Doc Martens that I absolutely hadddd to have when I was 15. I am leaning towards the Oakwood Suede Clarks Desert Boot or the Clarks Desert Breeze for purchase.

Review: Friendsgiving 2012

review

We are still getting remarkably warm weather in Minnesota and I am attributing it to the fact that I took out my parka last week. Because weather likes to do the opposite of what I prepare for. But it made for a great weekend to have our group's Second Annual Friendsgiving on Saturday night. Everyone made two dishes from scratch to bring and in true Minnesota form every contribution was in a hotdish pan.

I love how Minnesotans own the term "hotdish" and the rest of the world can keep their "casseroles".

While the manfriend made his go-to layered cheesy potato recipe, I decided to try and make something using wild rice. I have a mild obsession with wild rice because I love the texture, it's not really utilized as a side dish enough, and it doesn't get much more Minnesotan than mahnomen. I found a recipe for wild rice salad and made a variation of it listed below. I think it went over okay and the manfriend even said this may have to be my new go-to recipe for potlucks... since usually my go-to is pickle wraps. Or as I lovingly like to call them, Nordic Sushi.

Lessons learned from Friendsgiving include making sure to read this Apartment Therapy post on how to set a Thanksgiving buffet and to never ever play divorce games (Taboo and Catchphrase) with people you still want to be friends with, especially your significant other.

Wild Rice Salad
adapted from the LA Times

Total time: 1 hour
Servings: 4-6

1 cup wild rice
1/2 cup dried cranberries
2/3 cup chopped pecan, almond, cashew mix
2 tablespoons julienned red onion (the longer pieces add more color to the dish)
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 clove crushed garlic
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
1 teaspoon sugar
1/3 cup olive oil
Freshly ground salt and pepper

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add the wild rice to the boiling water and reduce the heat to medium, cover and simmer until the rice is tender (around 45 minutes) or to your liking. Drain the wild rice if there is any water left.

Make the dressing while the rice is cooking by mixing the vinegar, lemon juice, garlic, mustard, and sugar in a bowl. Add in the olive oil slowly while quickly stirring the mixture. Salt and pepper to your liking.

Once the rice is done cooking (and potentially drained), add the cranberries, nut mix, red onion, and dressing to the wild rice while it is still hot so the rice takes in the flavors.

Serve chilled but tastes really good while still hot as well.
